Girls Who Code visit our NY and SF offices

Girls Who Code is a non-profit organisation that strives to support and increase the number of women in computer science. Founded by Reshma Saujani in 2012, the organisation has one goal: to close the gender gap in the tech industry. Statistics have shown that the number of female computer science graduates have declined since the 1980s. Girls Who Code provide after school clubs and summer programmes to teach and promote interest in computing and programming. This summer, a few girls from the summer programme visited Blippar's New York and San Francisco offices to gain some insight on the company and be an honorary Blipparites for the day.

The following is an account of the girls' field trip to the Blippar office from the Girls Who Code class from GE in San Ramon:

On Friday, the 15th of July, Blippar welcomed us with a quick tour of the office where we saw the lounge, kitchen, pool table, and office space. We got the chance to test out the Blippar app on all of the different things around the office - from the books and plants, and even the walls!

After the tour, there was an open Q&A panel with a few Blippar employees. There was also a presentation and demo on Blippar’s media and educational applications. The Blippar employees opened up about their different educational paths, how they came to the company, their everyday tasks and where they saw Blippar going in the upcoming years. The girls also got the chance to test out the app. Using Blippbuilder, Blippar’s AR self-creation tool that requires zero coding experience, they made their very own drawings come to life.

The girls really enjoyed being part of the Blippar family for a day. Harmonie Yacob said, “the presentation was very interactive and it allowed us to get insight on new technologies.” Another student, Samantha Colbert-Neal, said, “I enjoyed visiting Blippar because it gave me a new perspective on augmented reality and what technology can do for us in the future.”

It was a great experience for all the girls to gain exposure of a tech company that was not only creating a useful and fun app, but who were trying to change the way people saw and experienced the world. It gave the girls another perspective of what technology could be used for: fun, education and so much more.
