Duke and Duchess of Cambridge give Blippar royal seal of approval in New York

Blippar co-founder and CEO Ambarish Mitra gave a demo of our visual browsing app to a very special audience in New York this week: the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

And their reaction? They loved it.

Looking at the blipps, the Duchess told Rish the concept of Blippar was ‘very smart’, and stressed that it must have been quite challenging to build.

The Blippar team had built two unique (and appropriately regal) blipps for the occasion. The first blipp uses a photograph of the royal couple as the marker, and blipping it connects the user’s phone immediately to all of the charities Prince William supports, enabling people to donate directly from their mobile.

The second blipp launches off Andy Warhol’s iconic 1985 portrait of Queen Elizabeth. Blipping the painting brings up additional digital information about the artwork on the user’s smartphone. The iconic painting is hung at the British General Consul Residence in New York.

The Duke also saw several education blipps, finding them all extremely interesting. Discussion arose over how Blippar’s visual browsing capabilities can be implemented most beneficially within the education sector, and how our content-rich platform could help people form deeper emotional connections with charity initiatives.

The Duke expressed particular curiosity in how Blippar might be used to facilitate learning in areas with low literacy rates.

The royal meetings took place at the beginning of the week. On Monday the Duchess of Cambridge and Rish attended a private lunch for British guests at the official residence of the British Consul General Danny Lopez and his wife Susan.

And on Tuesday Ambarish and our US VP Lisa Hu attended a GREAT Tech event at the Shutterstock offices, at which Blippar was one of only two companies to have a presence. They showed Blippar to both the Prince and Bill DiBlasio, New York’s Mayor, who most enjoyed the education blipps and one of the New York Metro card.

Speaking about the event, Ambarish said: ‘The Royal Family is a great brand ambassador for Britain. Their involvement in charity is phenomenal and I would love to work with them.’
