Empowering Young Creatives in Cannes Lions

The Cannes Lions festival is a notorious global meeting-place for brands, agencies and creatives to conjugate and connect since 1954. We at Blippar were delighted to be an integral part of the Cannes Lions festival this year. We mingled, entertained and showcased the vision and power of our platform. With the launch of the beta version of our new do-it-yourself augmented reality creation tools, we unrelinquished our AR power into the hands of delegates, creative agencies and students.

To physicalise our vision even further we organised a 48 hour hackathon with a class of young Lions, from Roger Hatchuel Academy. This Academy is run by Cannes Lions to prepare young talent to enter the industry and attracts every year the brightest new talent. We gave them the challenge to come up with ideas and a prototype of how they would enhance the delegate experience through our AR platform. The challenge was set, the tool taught and the young creatives set off gathering content and mindmapping disruptive AR prototypes via our drag and drop AR creation tool, Blippbuilder.

The competition was a great success and the students found the tool easy and intuitive to use. The entries varied from: augmented navigation to events; turning touch points in the Palais into interactive portals; to the gamification of the Cannes experience where delegates would get rewarded in accordance to how many events, talks or networking events they attended. The judging was tough with such an inpour of well thought out ideas and briefs. The winners of the competition received a massive round of applause and the potential to develop this idea further via their Blippbuilder license as well as other exciting prizes.

Cannes was a fantastic experience for us and it was amazing to see how eager the young creative talents were to use these new technologies and to be at the forefront of innovation. With the launch of the Beta Program, we aim to democratize augmented reality by putting it into the hands of agencies and creatives, and helping them drive growth through AR – a market forecast to be worth $120 billion by 2020.
