Blippar is a technology company specializing in augmented reality and computer vision, the field within Artificial Intelligence (AI) focused on understanding sight and recognizing the world in front of you. Blippar has created a range of products that can harness augmented reality and computer vision across a wide range of sectors. Blippar's flagship product is the Augmented Reality Browser - The Blippar App.
Ambarish Mitra and Omar Tayeb came up with the idea for Blippar after sharing a joke about the Queen coming to life out of a £20 note. A few days later, Tayeb had created a working prototype and after the two joined forces with Steve Spencer and Jess Butcher, Blippar was born!
Our mission is unabashedly bold: to be the bridge that brings the digital and physical worlds together, enhancing everyday life. Our products help people make sense of the world around them by embedding advanced intelligence and understanding into camera lenses and presenting entertaining or useful content based on what they see.
Augmented reality (AR) refers to technology that allows for digital information – videos, photos, links, games, etc. – to be displayed on top of real world items when viewed through the lens of a smartphone, tablet or wearable device.
Augmented reality can bring all your physical materials, packaging and even your products to life. AR unlocks digital content and provides a whole new channel to communicate with your customers - your products. And for consumers it visualizes products and concepts you wouldn't otherwise have access to.
Computer vision is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is focused on visual processing. The goal of computer vision is for computers to achieve human-level understanding of images. In order to enhance the world effectively and at scale with augented reality, you have to first understand that reality in front of you. For this reason we introduced computer vision into the Blippar app and as one of our core offerings.
Deep learning is a form of artificial intelligence technology which attempts to simulate the way a human brain works. At Blippar, we use this technology to train the lenses on smart devices to recognise any image or object in the same way that the human brain does.
Blippar is a privately owned company. We are backed by Qualcomm Ventures and Lansdowne Partners among others.

The Blippar app is an augmented reality browser. It uses the camera on your smartphone or tablet to recognize images and real-world objects and show relevant digital content – information, news, social media content and even games – right on top. We call these content experiences, "blipps." The act of scanning an item with your device is called, "blipping." When you blipp something, we use artificial intelligence (which learns to recognize things like humans do) to find relevant content. Then, using augmented reality, the app displays the content on top of the image or object by tracking it in 3D space. The content displayed is either pulled from our proprietary visual knowledge graph -- the Blipparsphere or for provided by the relevant brand for branded images and objects.
A blipp (noun) is digital content that has been added to an object in the real world. When you "blipp" (verb) that object with the Blippar app, the content is unlocked and displayed on your mobile, tablet or wearable device.
Download the free Blippar app for Android or iOS, open it up and then hold it up to the image or object you want to blipp. Fill the screen the screen with the object or image and wait for it to launch the content.
Blippar can recognise millions of real world objects. Try pointing your phone at a fruit, plant, public figure, animal or branded product to unlock information and experiences. You can even blipp the sky to get a weather report. We also work with brands to make cool augmented reality experiences for their products, so keep an eye out for the Blippar icon on products, packaging, publications and ads. Every week our technology gets smarter and can recognize more and more of the world.
When viewing a blipp, you can use the camera icon to take a screenshot and save it to your device or share it on social media or via email. You can also share blipps by pressing the share icon in the lower right corner while viewing a blipp. Don't forget to tag us in your post #blippar.
Here are a few troubleshooting tips...
Blippar is available to download for Android and iOS and works on smartphones and tablets.
This depends on the content. Typically, the Blippar app uses about 50-200kB of data in order to recognize the object that is being blipped. It then loads the content, which may be anywhere between 50kB to 5MB. Once the content is loaded, the user may interact with more content, which can mean loading web pages, videos or other content. The content creator should always ensure that their content is optimised for mobile so that videos and images aren’t unnecessarily large.
In order to work properly, Blippar needs your permission to access certain information on your device, including…
We are currently experimenting with Blippar for various wearable platforms, such as Glass and Epson Moverio.
A Halo is an Augmented Reality profile on someone’s face. It is your own place to tell your story. Your friends can view your Halo once you have published it, by scanning your face (in person or a good front-on photo) using the Blippar app. You can add pictures, YouTube videos, song clips and even link your Twitter handle. You can also add cool AR moods and 3D avatars to express how you are feeling in the moment.
While you’re creating your Halo it can only be seen by you. Once published, your Halo will be ready to wow other Blippar people who blipp you. If someone blipps you and your Halo is set to visible, they’ll be able to see and interact with the bubbles that you have placed around your face, they won’t be able to see private information like your email address. You’re always in control, so you can make your Halo invisible again whenever you like and then only you can see it. See the question below to find out how.
When you create your Halo it is invisible by default until you choose to publish it. Once you have published it you can make it invisible at any time by flicking the switch in the top left corner of your Halo.
No one but you. If someone blipps you they will see nothing. If someone has recently blipped you and tries to reopen your Halo by tapping on the card they will receive a message stating that the Halo they are trying to view is not available.
You have full control over your Halo. If you set it to invisible only you can see it, if you set it to visible then anyone who blipps your face can see it.
In order to become blippable, you need to go through a process of moving your face side to side and up and down in order to connect the dots that appear on screen. By doing this, your face is scanned from different angles, which allows Blippar’s clever technology to recognise you - you will need to touch four separate points on the screen for completion. To improve recognition of your face you can scan your face multiple times by accessing the “improve recognition” function once your Halo has been created.
Only you can create your own Halo. Halo creation involves taking moving, real-time images of the unique angles on your face, due to the number of angles captured it is very difficult to create a fake Halo using someone else’s face. If you ever have a concern regarding a suspicious Halo you can contact us via the “report a problem” function in the “more options” menu of that Halo or via firstname.lastname@example.org. We take user privacy very seriously and will not tolerate fake Halos.
Blipping a face works best when the person is facing you straight on and in good light. Other factors such as wifi/3G connection or hats, glasses or facial hair can also affect recognition. If you are still having issues it may be that the Blippar user need to strengthen their face recognition by rescanning their face. This can be improved by going to Halo tab>“more options” menu>improve recognition.
Very soon, public figures will be able to have their Halo verified - you will know a Halo is verified if it displays the tick icon beside the user nickname. If you are the management of a celebrity or public figure and wish to become verified please contact us on email@example.com
We take data storage and privacy very seriously. All data is stored on secure servers and we use encryption technology for additional security. You are in control of how much you share with the public and Blippar advises you to keep sensitive material (credit card numbers, personal address etc) offline.
We care about bogus Halos as much as you do. If you think a Halo is fake, please let us know by accessing the “more options” menu on that Halo and clicking ”report a problem”. Our user support team will investigate the issue and take appropriate action.
Halos are meant to be fun, not nasty. So if you see a Halo that upsets you, please let us know by accessing the “more options” menu on that Halo and clicking ”report”. Our user support team will investigate the issue and take appropriate action.
Yes, you can permanently delete your Halo by clicking “delete my profile” in the settings menu. This means that your Halo will be removed from Blippar and if you wish to republish it you will have to create it from scratch, however, you will still have a Blippar account, should you wish to use other Blippar products such as our AR creation suite and developer tools.
If you wish to delete your entire Blippar account, including your Halo then you should email us on firstname.lastname@example.org and our user support team will assist.

We grant free licenses to educators, offering access to Blippar’s powerful creation tool Blippbuilder.
The education license does not expire; educators have access to Blippbuilder for an indefinite period.
Educators can create unlimited blipps, using all of Blippbuilder’s features.
Educational blipps cannot be published. You need to issue a ‘code’ to your students, which must be entered into their devices in order for them to view the content.
We recommend that you save all created content in a single ‘campaign’, as this allows you to issue a single, unifying ‘campaign code’ that students can use to unlock all of your blipps. Using this approach, students only have to enter the code on their device once, and it will never have to be changed. Furthermore, the Blippar app saves the code even after the app has been closed, meaning that it only has to be entered once.
The free education license is limited to teaching applications, and precludes any form of institutional marketing or promotion. Please reach out to Blippar for Education for more information on commercial Blippbuilder licenses (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Yes, you are free to create Blippbuilder accounts for your students. Students require their own account if they want to create blipps on Blippbuilder. Students also need to download the Blippar app on their mobile device in order to view the content created on Blippbuilder.
When an account has been created for a school or college, the first registered user becomes an administrator for that group. As administrator, you can then freely add additional members to the group, both faculty and students.
Blippbuilder is a cloud-based tool, so you just need an up-to-date browser. On rare occasions, school firewalls may block Blippbuilder. It’s completely safe for you to use, so speak to your IT administrator to unblock your access.
Assets are the content features of your blipp – images, videos, and icons – that make your learning materials interactive. Blippbuilder comes with a bank of pre-loaded icons that you can use. Alternatively, you can create custom icons using third-party platforms such as Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft PowerPoint, and upload them to your asset library on Blippbuilder to make the blipp uniquely your own. For more information, see our asset guidelines.
Currently it is not possible to work with 3D assets in Blippbuilder, but we’re working on it!
The more complex the image, the easier it is for Blippar to recognise the marker. Images with a lot of contrast tend to work very well, while flat or monochromatic images may not work.
There isn’t a defined size limit for a blipp. However, blipps that contain many sequences and embedded assets may become slow to load on the Blippar app. One way to reduce the size of a blipp is to resize the individual assets you are using. For example, if you resize an image in Photoshop and upload it again to your asset library on Blippbuilder, it will reduce the size of your blipp.
