Ambarish Mitra and Omar Tayeb came up for the idea of Blippar after sharing a joke about the Queen coming to life out of a £20 note. A few days later, Tayeb had created a working prototype and after the two joined forces with Steve Spencer and Jess Butcher, Blippar was born! We quickly expanded to New York in our first year and we now have 11 offices around the globe with more to come!

Computer vision is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is focused on visual processing. The goal of computer vision is for computers to achieve human-level understanding of images. At Blippar we are pushing the boundaries of computer vision and trying to achieve this goal with our visual discovery platform.

Blippar uses the camera on your smartphone or tablet to recognize images and show dynamic digital content – information, news, social media content and even games – right on top. We call this content, "blipps." The act of scanning an item with your device is called, "blipping." When you blipp something, we use artificial intelligence (which learns to recognize things like humans do) to find relevant content. Then, using augmented reality, the app displays the content right on top of the image by tracking it in 3D space. In some cases, when there isn't specific content for what you've blipped, our technology scours the Web for relevant information to display.
A blipp (noun) is digital content that has been added to an object in the real world. When you "blipp" (verb) that object with Blippar, the content is unlocked and displayed on your mobile, tablet or wearable device.
Download the free Blippar app for Android, iOS or Windows Phone, open it up and then hold it up to the image you want to blipp. Fill the screen as much as you can with the image, hold still for a second or two and if the app recognizes the image, it will launch the blipp automatically.
Blippar can recognise millions of real world objects. Try pointing your phone at a plant, building, animal or product to unlock information and experiences. You can even blipp the sky to get a weather report. We also work with brands to make cool augmented reality experiences for their products, so keep an eye out for the Blippar icon on products, packaging, publications and ads. Every week our technology gets smarter and can recognize more and more of the world.
When viewing a blipp, you can use the camera icon to take a screenshot and save it to your device or share it on social media or via email. You can also share blipps by pressing the share icon in the lower right corner while viewing a blipp. Don't forget to tag us in your post!

Blippar is available to download for Android or iOS and works on smartphones and tablets.
This depends on the content. Typically, the Blippar app uses about 50-200kB of data in order to recognize the object that is being blipped. It then loads the content, which may be anywhere between 50kB to 5MB. Once the content is loaded, the user may interact with more content, which can mean loading web pages, videos or other content. The content creator should always ensure that their content is optimised for mobile so that videos and images aren’t unnecessarily large.

We take data storage and privacy very seriously. All data is stored on our secure servers. It is encrypted so that none of your personal details are traceable to you. You are in control of how much you share with the public and Blippar advises you to keep sensitive material (credit card numbers, personal address etc) offline.

Blippbuilder allows you to fluidly collaborate with your team throughout the blipp creation process. You can move a blipp from one user account to another or share a blipp with a colleague for review within seconds.
There is no limit, but if you think that you will have more than 100 users, please discuss with your business development representative.
Yes you can. Once your Blipp is created you will be given a test code that will allow you to trigger the Blipp experience on your phone so you can make sure it meets all of your expectations.
With our custom-made service, we can do the work for you, or you can use our self-service tool Blippbuilder to do it yourself! You retain full ownership over the content you create.
We store all content on Amazon S3 servers. Depending on the geographical location of a campaign, the content will be hosted in one of the Amazon regions across the globe: US West, US East, EU West, Singapore or Sydney. In addition, the content is cached on Amazon’s CDN (CloudFront).
It's completely up to you. You can choose for how long your campaign will be live.

When providing assets for custom-made service, we accept PSD, TIF, AI, EPS, PDF and PNG files for images, WAV, AIF and MP3 for audio, and any video format. Check our detailed asset guidelines here.
When using the Blippbuilder, you can upload PNG, JPEG or GIF files up to 960x640 pixels at 72ppi for images , MP3 files for audio, and MP4/AAC (H.264) files no larger than 50MB and no longer than 30 seconds for video files.

Yes. We offer Custom App Solutions via Layar, a part of the Blippar Group. We can work side-by-side with you to build you your own app with augmented reality capabilities from scratch. We do not offer app reskinning.

The education license does not expire; educators have access to Blippbuilder for an indefinite period.
Educators can create unlimited blipps, using all of Blippbuilder’s features.
Educational blipps cannot be published. You need to issue a ‘code’ to your students, which must be entered into their devices in order for them to view the content.
We recommend that you save all created content in a single ‘campaign’, as this allows you to issue a single, unifying ‘campaign code’ that students can use to unlock all of your blipps. Using this approach, students only have to enter the code on their device once, and it will never have to be changed. Furthermore, the Blippar app saves the code even after the app has been closed, meaning that it only has to be entered once.

Yes, you are free to create Blippbuilder accounts for your students. Students require their own account if they want to create blipps on Blippbuilder. Students also need to download the Blippar app on their mobile device in order to view the content created on Blippbuilder.
When an account has been created for a school or college, the first registered user becomes an administrator for that group. As administrator, you can then freely add additional members to the group, both faculty and students.
Blippbuilder is a cloud-based tool, so you just need an up-to-date browser. On rare occasions, school firewalls may block Blippbuilder. It’s completely safe for you to use, so speak to your IT administrator to unblock your access.
Assets are the content features of your blipp – images, videos, and icons – that make your learning materials interactive. Blippbuilder comes with a bank of pre-loaded icons that you can use. Alternatively, you can create custom icons using third-party platforms such as Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft PowerPoint, and upload them to your asset library on Blippbuilder to make the blipp uniquely your own. Currently it is not possible to work with 3D assets in Blippbuilder, but we’re working on it!
The more complex the image, the easier it is for Blippar to recognise the marker. Images with a lot of contrast tend to work very well, while flat or monochromatic images may not work.
There isn’t a defined size limit for a blipp. However, blipps that contain many sequences and embedded assets may become slow to load on the Blippar app. One way to reduce the size of a blipp is to resize the individual assets you are using. For example, if you resize an image in Photoshop and upload it again to your asset library on Blippbuilder, it will reduce the size of your blipp.

Our pricing is based on interactions, which means that you only pay for the success of your campaigns, i.e. whenever a user “blipps” one of the experiences you have created and accesses the content through the Blippar app.

You will have access to Blippar’s proprietary, best-in-class image recognition and augmented reality technology, allowing you to build and sell your own blipps using our self-service tools. We do not have a commission revenue model - we only charge for the interactions incurred in each blipp, all other services provided by our partners to their clients are priced by them converting Blippar into an additional revenue stream for your business, delivering more services to your current customers and attracting new clients.
There are numerous opportunities where AR can add value to the solutions you provide to your clients as blipps can launch AR games, discover recipes, do virtual try-ons, launch celebrity selfies or even 360º panoramas of the interior of a house or a car.
